Style Guides
Classics & Archaeology does not currently have a standarized Style Guide. The following are general guidelines. You should check with your lecturer as to which style guide they prefer and any specific requirements.
General Layout
It is preferable that assignments be typed or printed. Either way, assignments should:
- Be on A4 paper, using one side of the sheet only.
- Be double spaced.
- Have a 3cm margin.
- Have numbered pages.
- Be laid out in a way that all components (paragraphs, notes, bibliography, illustrations) are clearly distinguishable.
Illustrations
It is not necessary to provide illustrations or images in the essay for every work of art, architecture, scene, or artifact you refer to. However, it is important that you provide illustrations for those which you discuss in any length. This is particularly important for obscure or little known items. Black and white reproductions are adequate.
Illustration Labels
Illustrations should be clearly legible and labelled.
Work of Art
Name of artist, title, date of work, and collection or source of illustration.
Artifact, structure, or other archaeological object
Name of the object, its date, and collection or source of the photo or illustration.
Film or video still
Title of film, director, date of release.
Regularly back up all of your work. The Faculty of Arts requires that students keep a duplicate of all submitted written work to ensure against accidental loss.
