Classics & Archaeology Career Profiles

Michelle Glynn

Michelle Glynn BA Hons (Melbourne) 1990 MA (Melbourne) 1994
Current position: Editorial Manager, Lonely Planet

Michelle studied at Melbourne University from 1986 to 1994, focusing on Archaeology subjects, Middle Eastern Studies and languages. She graduated in 1994 with an Honours degree majoring  in Archaeology and in Middle Eastern Studies, and was awarded a Masters of Arts in Archaeology.

Although Michelle had enjoyed the experience of fieldwork with the University of Melbourne team in Syria, by 1995 she was interested in broadening her interests, and enrolled in an Associate Diploma of Professional Writing & Editing at RMIT. Her interests in the Middle East and travel experiences came in very handy at the end of the year when she was employed as a trainee editor in the Middle East & Africa unit at Lonely Planet (travel guide publisher). Michelle was made Senior Editor of this unit in 1998.

As Senior Editor Michelle was able to increase Lonely Planet’s coverage of archaeology sites in their Middle East and North Africa titles, and employ some specialists to write sections on themes such as Damascene architecture, Ancient Egypt, and Crusader castles.

For the last three years Michelle has been Lonely Planet’s Editorial Manager, which involves keeping an eye on more than 40 staff members! Michelle believes her background in Archaeology has been very useful, because of the research and writing skills she developed, and the opportunities to travel. You never know where your degree might lead you!
