Postgraduate Courses
Coursework
Graduate Diploma
The graduate diploma is similar to an undergraduate major and offers a comprehensive program of study in classics and archaeology. The course is suitable for general interest or professional development purposes and does not require a research project or thesis. Graduates are provided with a pathway to higher degree study and may qualify for entry to the postgraduate diploma.
Graduate Certificate
The graduate certificate provides students with a general understanding of key concepts and issues in classics and archaeology. Students undertaking this short and concentrated program of study will develop valuable skills of analysis and critique.
Postgraduate Certificate
The postgraduate certificate provides an entry point to an articulated structure of higher degree study and may qualify graduates for entry to the postgraduate diploma.
Postgraduate Diploma
The postgraduate diploma allows students to undertake a research project in a specialist field of study. Students will gain considerable knowledge in an area of classics and engage in critical assessment of the major theoretical claims of the discipline. The course provides a pathway to higher degree research for students who have not completed a four year BA (Honours) with a research component in classics.
Research
Master of Arts
The masters degree is designed for students to develop advanced skills in carrying out independent and sustained research in classics and archaeology. The thesis should demonstrate a critical application of specialist knowledge and make an independent contribution to existing scholarship in the area of research. Candidates may advance to the Doctor of Philosophy degree after successful completion of the masters or may apply to convert to the PhD at an earlier stage. An honours grade of at least H2B (70%) must be attained to qualify for the award of the masters degree.
PhD
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree enables you to undertake a substantial piece of independent and sustained research on an original topic under academic supervision. The research is expected to make a significantly new and innovative contribution to the discipline. The PhD thesis is deeper and more comprehensive than a Masters by Research thesis.
