Australian Association for Byzantine StudiesAustralian Association for Byzantine Studies aims to foster links between scholars, students and laypersons within Australia and New Zealand who are interested in Byzantium, Late Antiquity and related fields. The association supports and promotes three areas of activity: A bi-annual newsletter, Byzantine Studies in Australia, containing news, events, and information about scholarly activity within Australia and overseas. A biennial conference is held which offers the opportunity for members to present papers or to hear discussions of interest from scholars within Australia, as well as from overseas. Participation comes from a wide range of disciplines and covers a broad time span, so that papers, even when devoted to a particular theme are always diverse. The publication of Byzantina Australiensia, an academic series which aims to provide access to texts of the Byzantine period in translation, as well as to relevant scholarship. The Australian Association of Byzantine Studies is a member of the Association Internationale des Etudes Byzantines. It also has close working links with Byzantine groups in a number of countries. The Archaeological & Anthropological Society of Victoria (AASV)The Archaeological & Anthropological Society of Victoria (AASV) was formed in 1976 by the joining together of the separate Archaeological and Anthropological Societies. The latter society began in 1933 after a series of lectures by Melbourne University anatomist Frederick Wood Jones and the former followed the enthusiastic 1964 CAE lectures by Bill Culican a University of Melbourne archaeologist. AASV retains close links with the university running a lecture series in the Sisalkraft Theatre on the first Thursday of the month from March to November and one or two field trips each year. Membership includes a subscription to The Artefact, a refereed journal on the prehistory of the Pacific Rim. The Archaeological & Anthropological Society of Victoria (AASV) The Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens (AAIA)The Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens (AAIA) aims to promote in Australia ancient, medieval and modern Greek studies. To this end it provides services to its members in Australia and facilities for working Greece. Apart from interested people who have become Individual Members, there are many groups who have joined as Corporate or Institutional Members including twelve universities (Sydney, Tasmania, Queensland, Western Australia, New England, Macquarie, Australian National University, Adelaide, La Trobe, Newcastle and Melbourne). The Archaeological Institute at Athens Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Material Inc. (AICCM)AICCM is the Australian national organisation for conservators and people interested in the preservation of cultural material. Membership of the AICCM is open to all those who are concerned about conservation and are interested in furthering the aims of the AICCM both in Australia and internationally. As the peak body for materials conservation practice in Australia the AICCM has an ongoing interest in raising both the profile of the conservation profession and promoting the skills and professionalism of its members. Its members include staff from both schools and universities between which two levels of education there is a strong working bond. Its activities include lectures given by distinguished academics from Australia and overseas; publication of the yearly journal Iris and an annual conference for secondary teachers.
