PhD Candidature Timeline

This timeline is calculated without leaves of absence or lapses in candidature. Forms are automatically sent to you by the School of Graduate Studies (SGS). Information on the Intention to Submit and other forms is available on the SGS website.

SGS also provides useful information on managing your PhD candidature

8 months 16 months SGS sends Confirmation Report/Progress Report 1.
9-10 months 16-24 months

Candidate makes 20-30 minute oral presentation with defense

Candidate submits Report and Sample of Writing (8-10,000words).

12 months 24 months Candidate Confirmed
24 months 48 months Second Progress Report Due
30 months 60 months Review by Circulation Due
Semester prior to thesis submission Semester prior to thesis submission Public presentation of research findings
3 months before submission 3 months before submission

Intention to Submit (80-word Summary)

Completion Report for PhD Candidates

36 months 72 months Submit Thesis (3 copies)

Make required revisions

Revisions are approved by Chair of Examiners

Re-examination (if warranted)

2 permanently bound copies (one on acid free paper) submitted to School of Graduate Studies

Lastly, SGS pass letter sent to candidate

(1) 6 months full-time, 12 months part-time in the case of conversion from MA.
(2) Provided all requirements are satisfied.
