The convenors

Jane Montgomery Griffiths

(Classical Studies Program, Monash University)

Originally from the UK, Jane has pursued a hybrid career combining academic teaching and research in the UK and Australia, with a career in the UK as an award-winning actor and theatre director. She has lectured at Cambridge University (as the 1998 Judith E. Wilson Visiting Junior Fellow and the inaugural Leventis Fellow in Greek Drama 2001), the University of Melbourne and La Trobe University. She has also been Artistic Director of the Triennial Cambridge Greek Play (in ancient Greek). Her research areas include the relationship between Classical philology and performance theory in Sophocles' Electra, and the reception of Classical studies in the modern world.

Paul Monaghan

(Lecturer, Theatre Studies, School of Creative Arts, University of Melbourne)

Paul Monaghan worked in professional theatre for many years before returning to the University. His research interests lie principally in the area of Greek and Roman theatre in performance, in both the ancient and the modern world, and Australian contemporary theatre practice. Paul is co-convenor and co-editor of the Double Dialogues conference and journal (http://www.doubledialogues.com), and co-convenor of the Dramaturgies project (http://www.realtimearts.net then go to 'Dramaturgies Now'), which examines dramaturgical practice in Australian theatre. He is currently combining these various interests in a major project on the reception of Greek tragedy in Australia.

Professor Frank Sear

(Director, Centre for Classical Studies, University of Melbourne)

Professor Frank Sear is known nationally and internationally for his work on the physical spaces of Greek and Roman theatre. With his team of architects and archaeologists he has conducted detailed analytical surveys of a number of Roman theatres including Volterra, Pompeii, Gubbio, Benevento and Taormina in Italy, Jerash in Jordan and Orange in France. His interest is primarily in the design of Roman theatres and his recently completed book, containing a catalogue of all 1,000 known Roman theatres, recently published by the Oxford University Press.
