The Centre for Classics & Archaeology

The Centre for Classics & Archaeology is one of the leading international centres for the study of the ancient world. The only program of its kind in Australia, the Centre is home to cutting edge research and field study undertaken by its staff, researchers and fellows. The Centre is affiliated with insitutions such as The Classical Association of Victoria (CAV) with whom we regularly collaborate on a variety of lectures and events.

The Centre provides students with a multi-disciplinary perspective on ancient Graeco-Roman, Aegean and Near Eastern civilisations. The study of Classics, Archaeology, Latin and Ancient Greek will give you insight and understanding into your world today by exploring how ancient cultures have contributed to the development of our modern world. We offer subjects that cover such topics as archaeology, religious, political and social life in ancient societies, classical literature and mythology, art and architecture and a range of course options. Consider joining us and undertaking an overseas study venture, participating in hands-on fieldwork and pursueing a single study subject through the Community Access Program.

Research in the Centre is groud-breaking with staff involved in a number of projects, many of which are funded by the Australian Research Council. Current projects range from fieldwork and archaeological surveys to the development of award-winning multimedia study resources. The Centre offers access to world-class research facilities such as the classics & archaeology collection at the Ian Potter Museum of Art.

Classics and archaeology has experienced a renewed popularity within contemporary culture with a number of recent, exciting discoveries and a steady flow of classical and archaeological-themed television shows and blockbuster films. The broader community can participate in this resurgence and the vibrant academic culture of the Centre through the Community Access Program, Classics Summer School and the public lecture program organised by The School of Art History, Cinema, Classics and Archaeology in which staff, researchers and visiting scholars regularly contribute. The Centre also maintains strong links to secondary school communities and provides support for students studying the classics.
