Founded in 1912, the Classical Association operates for the propagation and well-being of Classics and Ancient World Studies in the state of Victoria in Australia. Our activities include a rich program of lectures given by distinguished academics from Australia and overseas. We have also supported academic conferences at the University of Melbourne and Monash University on ancient world topics. The Allen Memorial Lecture is delivered every year at Ormond College in honour of Horace William Allen (the Classical Association’s first secretary, and Vice-Master of Ormond from 1915-1943). We also award the annual Alexander Leeper Prize (in honour of the Classical Association’s first president, and first Warden of Trinity College) to the highest-achieving student in the final honours year of a Classics degree at a Victorian university.
The Classical Association’s Teachers Wing organises an annual conference for secondary school teachers of Classics (usually at the start of March) and provides support to Latin teachers through mentoring, network meetings, and the dissemination of teachers' notes. The Teachers Wing holds revision days in the spring for students taking the VCE exam in Classics or Latin and runs a National Classics Competition for students in Latin or Ancient Greek from Beginners to Year 12.
The Classical Association publishes a refereed journal called Iris. This journal contains articles on all aspects of the classical world. The most recent issue (Volume 21, 2008) was distributed in April 2009.
